Match Report - 08 Nov 2015, Hertfordshire County Short Mat Bowling Association Inter County Championship Premier 2 lost to Buckinghamshire

The Bucks Stop Herts

Buckinghamshire have an impressive home record and their home advantage showed in the latest Inter County Championship qualifying group match. In the first three sessions of play, the game points were shared but Buckinghamshire outscored Hertfordshire heavily which proved decisive when the bonus points were allocated.

Session 1 (singles and pairs)
Tony Gayler’s singles game was very close for the first seven ends when the scores were tied 5-5. Tony then pulled ahead and, despite dropping a 4 on the last end, won 14-11. Brian McGivern was in contention for nine ends before he was given a lesson in mat-on-mat bowling, losing the remaining ends and finishing 7-24 down.
Aaron Jones and Darren Stanford led from start to finish. Although they dropped a 4 and two 3s they finished 16-11 ahead. In the remaining pairs game Pauline Taylor and Jeanette Gayler never really go going. They scored their first shot on the fifth end but lost 9 shots in four ends and ended at 8-18.

Session 1 result: Buckinghamshire 4 pts Hertfordshire 4 pts

Session 2 (triples and fours)
Rebecca Nightingale, Margaret Regan and Liz Bradley started brightly and led 7-4 after six ends. The Bucks trio then subjected them to a seven end pounding and the final score was 8-18. The other Herts triple of Jill Oakes, Audrey Fowler and Brian Fowler were in control of their game. They slipped behind briefly at four ends before a 4 shot count put them back ahead and they went on to win 14-8.
Graham Yates, Dorothy Hill, John Taylor and Peter Griffiths suffered at the hands of a very experienced four and went down heavily 3-24. In the other fours game, Hertfordshire fielded two debutants; Roy Duke and Sam Salmon. Together with Margaret and Alan Hare they enjoyed their first game winning impressively at 16-1.

Session 2 result: Buckinghamshire 4 pts Hertfordshire 4 pts

At the halfway stage of the match both counties had recorded 8 points. However, the home team carried a positive shots difference forward in all four disciplines.

Session 3 (reverse singles and pairs)
Tony Gayler couldn’t repeat his earlier win. He trailed throughout to lose 6-14. Brian McGivern had clearly taken a lot from his first session lesson and leapt out to an 8-1 lead after seven ends. His opponent fought back to within 2 shots before Brian finished the game off, winning 15-9.
Aaron Jones and Darren Stanford opened with 2 shots on the first end before facing a string of losing ends and finishing 8-19 behind. Meanwhile, Pauline Taylor and Jeanette Gayler were having a much better time. They were 4-7 behind after seven ends but conceded only one more shot in their 20-8 win.

Session 3 result: Bucks 4 game pts + 4 bonus pts Hertfordshire 4 game pts + 0 bonus pts

Session 4 (reverse triples and fours)
The final session of play returned just a single point for Hertfordshire. Rebecca Nightingale, Margaret Regan and Liz Bradley dropped a 5 shot count early on and never really recovered, losing 10-16. Jill Oakes and the Fowlers scored on eight of their thirteen ends but were held to a 9-9 draw.
The four of Graham Yates, Dorothy Hill, John Taylor and Peter Griffiths started badly, dropping 8 shots on the first three ends. However, they held their own for the remainder of the game and finished 6-16. The Hertfordshire quartet of Margaret Hare, Roy Duke, Sam Salmon and Alan Hare opened with a 3 shot count and were tied at 4-4 after four ends. They fell behind 4-11, scored two 3s and were only a single shot adrift with the last end to play. A tense closing end went the way of the home team and the final score was 10-12.

Session 4 result: Bucks 7 game pts + 4 bonus pts Hertfordshire 1 game pt + 0 bonus points

Match summary
Hertfordshire were the equal of Buckinghamshire on game points in three of the four sessions of play but the home team dominated the scoreboards in all four disciplines, taking a maximum 8 bonus points which was a major factor in the winning margin. Hertfordshire’s hopes of topping the qualifying group now rely on Northamptonshire pulling off an unlikely win at home to Buckinghamshire.
