Barnet League Week Eighteen

Division one

Shillington Red’s Clive, Derek and Neil played Greenwood Peckers Audrey, Brian and Mark. Red started well taking a single followed by a triple. Peckers came back on end three for a single and followed this with a four. Taking two more singles and a second four they had a 12 – 4 lead after seven ends. Reds now fought back taking two singles followed by an impressive five they had reduced the gap to one shot. With end eleven being declared a tied end it was all very close. Peckers came back and held a triple on end twelve to which Reds replied by taking a double. Peckers then applied the pressure taking the last two ends for two further triples they had the win at 21 – 13.

Division two

Cuffley Gin’s Anne, Derek and Paul played Letchworth Tigers Sue, Bev and Margaret. Gin took the first end for a single. Tigers then started a short run, taking a double, a single and following it with a four they were 7 – 1 up after four ends. Gin came back on end five for a double only to see Tigers roar ahead taking three singles, two doubles and two fours to be 22 – 3 up after twelve ends. Although Gin held a single on end thirteen, Tigers come back to take a fourth four on the penultimate end. Gin had the pleasure of wining the last end for a single in this difficult match. Tigers had another win under their belt at 26 – 5.

Greenwood Peckers win puts them back at the top spot in Division one and they now look favourites to take the title, although any of the first three places could be the eventual winner. With these top three teams all playing next week it could be decided then. Shillington Red’s loss confirms that the two teams dropping to the second division next year will both be from Shillington. Letchworth Tigers win this week reinforces their second position but they now have a three week wait before they play their final crucial game to see if they can take the top spot. There is only one game in the second division next week and that one won’t alter the current positions although a win for Northiam West will keep them in contention. See you all again next week.
