Barnet League Week 20

06 Mar 2019

The penultimate week of the Barnet League was completed last night with 2 matches in each Division.  Both  top spots have now been decided but the minor places are still up for grabs with only one week to go.

In Division 1 Greenwood Goshawks clinched  first place by beating their Club-mates Greenwood Hawks. Goshawks took an early lead which they gradually increased throughout the rest of the game, winning comfortably by 14 shots to 7. In the other Div 1 match Letchworth Dragons threw away their chance of overhauling  Goshawks when they were well beaten by an improving Northiam East.  After 8 ends Letchworth were leading 8 - 6 but Northiam picked up a 4 on the next end and then didn't look back,  winning 16 - 9. Although the Dragons still retain second place, this win takes Northiam East into 3rd place with an outside chance of getting second.

Cuffley Gin have already taken top spot in the 2nd Division but the next 3  places will all go down to the wire. In their game against Shillington Black, 3rd placed  Cuffley Tonic took a firm grasp from the start, leading 11 - 0 after only 4 ends. Although Shillington rallied in the final few ends, it was too little too late and Cuffley Tonic ran out easy winners by 19 shots to 9 to move into second place. Tonic have now completed all their games but can still be overtaken by Harpenden Owls if the Owls win their final game against Northiam West, who were in action in the other Division 2 match against St Margaret's 2. This proved to be a very tight game throughout; although Northiam took an early 5 - 0 lead, St Margaret's fought back to draw level  after 9 ends; Northiam then re-established a 2 shot lead after 13 ends only for St Margaret's to take the lead on the next end with a 3. Northiam West then won the final end to draw the match 11 shots all!
