2017-2018 SEASON SUMMARY
DIVISION 1
CHAMPIONS: GREENWOOD A
Greenwood A started the defence of their 2016-2017 title with a close encounter against St Margaret's 1, a 12-11 win. Their only defeat before the Christmas break was to their club mates Greenwood B who got the better of the derby match by 2 shots. The new year began with a drawn match with Letchworth 1 after which they went on a winning run and clinched the title in their return game with Greenwood B.
Letchworth 1 opened up with 2 losses. Their draw with Greenwood A proved to be decisive. Just one more shot and they would have finished with the same points as the champions. Letchworth 1 had a number of close matches and finished in runner up spot with a shot difference of only +1.
Harpenden B started the season with 3 comfortable wins. Their only losses in 2017 were to Greenwood A and they were second placed entering 2018. But they didn't win again until the last game of the season.
Greenwood B found life in Division 1 a little difficult to start with, opening up with 4 straight losses. However, they followed that with 5 wins and finished their first season in the top division with a 50% record.
Harpenden A finished with just 3 wins but both of their losses to Letchworth 1 were by a single shot and they were unlucky not to accumulate more points.
St Margaret's 1,despite finishing at the bottom of the table, showed what could have been in their two matches against the champions. They lost their opener by 1 shot and won the return fixture by the same margin.
DIVISION 2
CHAMPIONS: NORTHIAM EAST
Northiam East just pipped Northiam West in their opening fixture and followed up with 4 wins out of 5. Their first setback was a heavy defeat by St Margaret's 2 but from there to the end of the season they were unbeatable.
Letchworth 2 had an equally good start, winning five of their first six matches. They were soundly beaten by the eventual champions and St Margaret's 2 before a final run in of four wins secured runners up position.
Shillington, newcomers to the Barnet League, took 7 points from their first six matches. Another 6 points from the second half of the season earned a third place finish.
St Margaret's 2 looked to be well in contention scoring their 12 points before the end of January including an impressive 20-6 win over Northiam East. However, a pointless finish to the season ended their chances of troubling the top two.
Northiam West's 10 point return could have been much better with three of their losses being by a single shot.
Northiam South won their opening match but didn't win again until their penultimate fixture, drawing two of the intervening games.
Harpenden C had to wait until 2018 to get their first point. They proved much harder to beat from there winning two matches and missing out against Shillington in their final fixture by 10-11.
