ABOUT ST MARGARET'S
St Margaret's Short Mat Bowls Club was formed in 1991 at St Margaret's Church, Finchley in Barnet, North London, under the chairmanship of the late Josephine (Jo) Canning, who would be Chair for over 25 years.
Startup funding was provided by the Milly Apthorp Charitable Trust after an application to the London Borough of Barnet.
Assistance with equipment was provided by Roy Duke, current President of the Hertfordshire County Short Mat Bowls Associaton (HCSMBA) - also Development Officer of the English Short Mat Bowls Association (ESMBA) - and Tony Gayler, both current St Margaret's players.
Originally afilliated to the London Short Mat Bowls Association, under the ESMBA, St Margaret's later moved to the HCSMBA in early 1998.
In January 2017, with the re-development of St Margaret's church, St Margaret's moved to it's present site in Cockfosters on the border of Barnet and Enfield.
Play currently takes place on up to three mats on Monday afternoons and Friday evenings throughout the year. Games are mostly informal, but a club 'Aussie Pairs' tournament takes place across the year.
St Margaret's enters two teams in the county wide Barnet League and we have a number of members who represent Hertfordshire in inter-county matches. The club also has both a County and National umpire as members.
All St Margaret's members are registered to the HCSMBA and ESMBA.
Current Membership fee (2017-2018) - £15 per annum, due October. Includes ESMBA Rule Book and insurance.
Current Session fee (2017-2018) - £4
Visiting players welcome.
For those who wish to try the sport, four free introductory sessions are available - bowls can be provided, but players must provide their own flat soled shoes.
Experienced St Margaret's members provide support and guidance for new and developing players, and members can join in with regular county playing and learning activites across the year at the county venues in Potter's Bar and Hatfield.
