Return of the Barnet League

09 Sep 2021

Hello everyone, following the long enforced break from our Barnet League competition we finally got back to completing the league which started in October 2019. I would normally add which week number it is but quite frankly I’ve lost count. When in March 2020 we stopped playing, the top of both divisions was close with a number of teams fighting it out for first and second place. As we return unfortunately a few teams have had to withdraw. These are Harpenden Nightjars, Harpenden Owls and Cuffley Tonic. As per the current rules their remaining games have been awarded to their opponents with a score of 15 – 0. These scores have already been added to the league tables on the website. Don’t forget you can check out all the latest match results and the current League tables on this website under the menu selection ‘BARNET LEAGUE’

On Tuesday of this week there was one 1st and two 2nd division matches.

Division 1

Northiam East played Cuffley Gin. Gin got of to a good start taking the first six ends to give themselves a lead of 14 – 0. Northiam then took a three in the seventh end followed by a single. From this point on the match was fairly even with Northiam taking a further three ends and Gin winning four. However the early wins meant that Cuffley Gin won the match 20 – 10.

Division 2

Shillington Red played Shillington Black. Red took the first end for a single, black replied taking the second end for two. The next four ends were taken alternately with Black easing in front with a score 7 – 3. At this point Red turned the tide completely winning the remaining nine ends. Red won the match 15 – 7

Greenwood Hawks played Shillington White. Hawks took the first end for a three, white came straight back taking the next two ends to level the score at three all. Hawks took four of the following five ends and stretched out a lead of 9 – 4.  White then took a two, although they dropped a single in the following end they then held the eleventh end for a three and dropped the twelve for a single. The Hawks were still in front with a score of 11 – 9. White then took a single to narrow the gap followed by a three to go in front for the first time in the match. Despite losing the last end for a single White won 13 – 12.

So after the first of the remaining four weeks, the top of the two divisions have already changed. Cuffley Gin look fairly confident to win the first Division although it is still mathematically possible for them to slip into second place. The second Division however is completely open at the top. Shillington White, Shillington Black and Letchworth Tigers are going to be the top three teams. However it is so close that no one can predict the final outcome. Next week sees a Division one match only so we will have to wait for the results on the 21st September before we can make any predictions. However the very last week sees all three teams in action. Nail biting stuff, well I’m biting mine. The only sure thing is with two going up for next season there is going to be at least one Shillington team in the first division.
