Over 55’s Pairs Qualifiers.
Hertfordshire’s county Over 55’s competition was held on Sunday the 20th October at Jimmy Mac’s. We had fourteen pairs enter but as yet we do not know how many qualifying places will be awarded to Hertfordshire, for the Nationals held in February. The competition was run as two groups of four and two groups of three in round robins of ten ends. The top two teams in each group then went into the quarter finals.
The round robin stages saw the following eight pairs through, Jeff Branch and Dennis Mack, Roger Watkinson and Terri Watkinson, Bill Gearing and Toni Gearing, Brian McGivern and Alan Spicer, Jan Rogers and Julia Bruce, Brian Fowler and Audrey Fowler, Neil Rixon and Martin Nash, Andrew Miles and Alan Hare.
Following the quarter and semi-finals, a closely fought match for third place, was won by Letchworth’s Andrew Miles and Alan Hare, just beating Alan Spicer and Brian McGivern into fourth place.
The final of the Over 55’s pairs was between the Bush Hill Blues pair of Roger and Terri Watkinson playing Jeff Branch and Dennis Mack. After ten ends the pairing of Jeff and Dennis came out on top and are this year’s Hertfordshire Over 55’s pairs champions.
The next round of these County/ National competitions will be the ‘Fours’, to be held at Elm Court on Saturday the 10th December.
