Barnet League Week Nineteen

04 Feb 2025

This week sees three of our top five teams playing at Hatfield. Can we see some movement at the top of the table? Read on to find out. The Hive was buzzing last night as not only did we have four important ‘Barnet League’ games the other two mats were being used for roll ups.

Mat one had our second place Letchworth Lions Alan S, Andrew and Margaret playing Fairfield Falcons Gill, Neil and Bev. Falcons swooped in for a single on the first end. Lions roared and took a double for the lead. Falcons gained height as Lions roar subsided. They regained the lead with a triple and continued by taking three singles, a double and a second triple to be 12 – 2 up after eight ends. Lions awoke from their nap and took a four, Falcons replied for a single but Lions attacked again, taking a triple they had reduced Falcons lead to 13 – 9 after eleven ends Falcons pushed again they started with a triple and followed this with a double and a single for a 19 – 9 lead with one end to play. Lions attacked the last end and took the second four of the game but it was too late as Falcons gained another win at 19 – 13.

Mat two had our table leaders Greenwood Peckers Colin, Wendy and Mark playing Potters Bar Kestrels Jill, Steve and Barry. Peckers started slowly with two singles, they followed this with two doubles and two more singles for an 8 – 0 lead after six ends. Kestrels gained height and swooped in for a single on end seven . Peckers upped their game and took a four followed by a five. Kestrels swooped in again on end ten, taking a double to reduce peckers lead to 17 – 3. The last five ends saw Peckers attack taking a triple three singles and a double they increased their shot difference significantly with a 25 – 3 win.

Mat three had two of the lower teams in the table playing each other. We had St Margaret’s Mars Jim, Derek and Jeanette playing Harpenden Eagles Val, Beryl and Deidre. Eagles started slowly taking a single and a double. Mars rose in the sky and matched this with a single and a double of their own and it was three all after four ends. Eagles flapped their wings and started a short run, starting with a double they followed this with a triple and a third double to be 10 – 3 up after seven ends. Mars shone brightly on end eight by taking a double. Eagles attacked soaring high they held two triples, two doubles and two singles to be 22 – 5 up going into the last end. Mars attacked the last end and following some measures took a resounding five however Eagles had their third win of the season at 22 – 10

Mat four and Mar’s stable mates St Margaret’s Mercury’s Lyn, Terri and Roger were playing fifth place Shillington Black’s Paul, Tony and Julia. Black started well with a double and followed this with a second double. Mercury then got started on end three with a single and followed this with a second single. Black pushed on end five, taking a four they had an 8 – 2 lead. The temperature and Mercury rose, they started with a single then took a four and a further single to level the game at eight all after eight ends. Black pushed and regained the lead with a triple on end nine, Mercury pulled back with a single on end ten and it was 11 – 9 to Black with five ends to go. Black got their heads down, they started with a single and followed this with two triples and a double for a 20 – 9 lead with one end to play. Leaving the head wide open Blacks were down one shot as Roger drew the last bowl into the head for shot  to take a double, however Black’s had another win at 20 – 11.

Another interesting week at the Hive, with our leaders Greenwood Peckers taking their fourteenth win, they look uncatchable. Letchworth Lions loss makes their second place look vulnerable as Greenwood Hawks are only one point below them with two games in hand. Northiam East and Shillington Black in fourth and fifth place are having a good tussle. Our six other teams are slightly behind but with six more games to play for those in the middle of the table anything could happen. See you all next week when all five of our table leaders are playing, surely we will see some movement at the top of the table. See you all next week when we will find out.
