Barnet League week Twenty Three

04 Mar 2025

Hello all our Barnet league followers. This week we had another four games at Hatfield but before that the outstanding game between Greenwood Hawks and Fairfield Falcons was played on Friday at Greenwood Park, read on to see how these five games went.

Greenwood Park held it’s first ever Barnet League game on Friday the 28th February between Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren and Fairfield Falcons Gill, Neil and Bev. Hawks got started with a triple and followed this with a hotshot six. Falcons started to get the mat and took two doubles in succession. Hawks squeezed in for a single but Falcons came straight back for another double and a single to reduce Hawks lead to 10 – 7 after seven ends. Hawks gained height and swooped in for the kill they started with a double and followed this with a triple. Continuing their run they took another double some singles and a triple to be 22 – 7 up with two ends to play. Falcons showed some strength and attacked to take a final double on the penultimate end. Hawks finished the game by taking their fourth triple of the game for a 25 – 9 win.

Now we are back to Hatfield this Tuesday the 04th March for our standard four games.

Mat one had a Shillington derby. We had Black’s Paul, Bill and Julia playing Red’s Trevor, Carol and Neil. Blacks got this game started with a single and followed this with a second. Reds pushed and held a four on end three, following this with a double they had a 6 – 2 lead. Blacks pushed on the following end for a single but Reds hit hard again with a triple on end six extending their lead to 9 – 3. Blacks had a swap around and it must of worked because they took a five on end seven and reduced Reds lead to one shot. Reds came back and extended their lead with a double. Blacks matched this on end nine and then took the lead on end ten with a second double to go 12 – 11 up. Reds then upped their game. They started levelled it with a single and followed this with a triple, a second single and another double to be 18 – 12 up with one end to play. Looking for a hotshot for the draw Blacks pushed hard. They managed to hold the last end for a final single giving Reds another win at 18 – 13.

Mat two and Northiam East’s Jeff, Martin and Jan were playing Harpenden Eagles Deidre, Brian and Denise. Eagles started with their talons out by taking a single followed by a double. East got their compass out and took direction for a single and followed by a second single. Eagles pulled their lead back by taking another single on end five. East changed track and took two further singles and it was all square at four all after seven ends in this close game. East’s direction improved with a double and the lead. Eagles came straight back for a single. East continued in the correct direction with a double followed by a single and a triple to be 12 – 5 up after twelve ends. Eagles swooped in for a single but East pushed and took a triple on the following end. The last end saw Eagles swoop in for the final time for their fifth single but East had the win at 15 – 7.

Mat three had Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren on their second outing in less than a week playing St Margaret’s Mercury’s Rebecca, Steve and Darren. Mercury rose to the challenge by taking a double on the first end. Hawks took end two for a single and followed this with a four and a second single for a 6 – 1 lead. Mercury rose again for another single on end five. Hawks pushed and showed Mercury why they are second on the table. They started with a double and followed this with a single and two fours to increase their lead to 17 – 3. Mercury fought back on end ten and took a second double but this was their last. Hawks held on in the following five tight ends by holding each one for a single. Hawks had a conclusive win at 22 – 5 and further improved their shot difference.

Mat four and our table leaders, Greenwood Peckers Wendy, Brian and Mark were playing Fairfield Falcons Gordon, Gill and Bev on their second outing in a week. Peckers started slowly with a single, they then ramped it up and held a hotshot six and followed this with a triple. Falcons gained success on end four with a single. Peckers hit straight back by taking a five, they followed this with two singles, a double, four triples and a four to improve their score. The penultimate end saw Falcons get some respite and they tripled their score with a double. Peckers however were relentless in their assault, taking a triple on the last end they also had massively improved their shot difference with a 38 – 3 win.

Another week goes by in our Barnet league and the Greenwood Park teams are sitting quite convincingly at the top of our table. The big question now is which version of Greenwood will take the title. Peckers are leading with only one game left to play. If both teams win their final games then we could have a tie on points and the title will be decided by shot difference. With only seventeen shots in it and Hawks having two games in hand it could get close. Do we have a ruling if the shot difference is tied as well?🤞 The tussle for third and fourth is also close, with only one point between them and both with three to play Northiam East and Letchworth Lions will be upping their game for their last three matches. Will the fight for the top four places continue until the last week or will next weeks games resolve it. Watch this space next week when Hawks, East and Lions will be battling it out again.
