Barnet League the Penultimate Week

18 Mar 2025

Well here it is week twenty five, our penultimate week and the top of the table is all up for grabs. With three of our top four playing this week will the final result become clear? That mid table order is also far from decided. Read on to see how everyone got on this week.

Mat one had St Margaret’s Mars Paul, Brian and Jeanette playing Letchworth Lions Andrew, Margaret and Alan H. With Lions needing a win to keep their chances of that third place it was game on. Mars certainly had something to say about that. They started with a double and followed that with a single. Lions pushed and held a single on end three but Mars continued their attack taking a further single and two doubles for a 8 – 1 lead after six ends. Lions had a little roar and pushed for a single but Mars came straight back for another single. Lions pushed harder for a double but again Mars held another single and were now 10 – 4 up after ten ends. Lions thought hard about that third place, they roared some more and went in for the kill. Starting with a single and following that with a four they had reduced Mars lead to one shot in two ends. Now smelling blood they roared some more and took the lead with a whomping five. Mars pushed back and held a single on the fourteenth end only to see Lions roar again and take the last end for a triple and the win at 17 – 11.

Mat two had the mid table shoot out with St Margaret’s Mercury’s Darren, Lyn and Rebbeca playing Shillington Red’s Derek, Michelle and Trevor. Mercury started this game by taking the first end for a double. Reds, well they saw red and went on the attack, they started by matching Mercury’s double. They followed this with a triple a second double and three singles for a 10 – 2 lead after seven ends. Now it was Mercury’s turn to see red and they had certainly seen a lot of them so far. They started by taking a triple on end eight and followed this up with three singles. With the scoreboard looking much friendlier at 8 – 10 they continued their run by taking a triple and the lead at 11 – 10 after twelve ends. The Reds pushed back and leveled the game with a single. With two ends to play and the score at eleven all it was game on. Mercury ‘rose’ to the challenge and took the penultimate end for a triple. Reds went all out on the last end but the last bowl fell into place and Mercury finished this game as they had started with another double and the win at 16 – 11.

Mat three had our newcomers Potters Bar Kestrels Bernice, Steve and Mike playing second place and title challengers Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren. Hawks got this game started with a double. Kestrels instantly replied for a single on end two. Hawks with that top spot foremost in their thoughts went in for the kill. The next nine ends saw them take two singles, five doubles and two triples. End twelve and Kestrels took control for their second end and held a double. Hawks came straight back, holding a single followed by a hotshot six and finishing with a double they had another win under their belt at 29 – 3.

Mat four and Shillington Black’s Paul, Tony and Julia were playing third place Northiam East’s Mike, Martin and Jeff. With only a one point lead over Lions, East were desperate for the win. They started by taking the first end for a double, Black came straight back for the lead with a triple on the second end. East pushed again and levelled it with a single, they followed this with two doubles and a four for an 11 – 3 lead after six ends. Black came in for a single but East then continued their run taking two more singles and a second four for a 17 – 4 lead with five ends to play. Blacks got their heads together and had a switch around. It worked as the following end they held a single, East matched this the next end but Blacks pushed again and took a triple on end thirteen.  The penultimate end saw East hold on for another single. Blacks pushed again and took their third triple on the last end to reduce Easts win to 19 – 11.

Well what a week !, Greenwood Peckers have topped our table for twenty four weeks only to see their club mates Greenwood Hawks steal the lead with only one week to go. They are both on a stunning thirty two points but Hawks substantial win this week gives them a shot difference of plus fourteen. With both teams playing their final game next week its still all to play for. Hawks will be playing Mars. Peckers will be playing Lions, with both teams fighting to improve their position it could be the deciding game of this seasons League. Last time they met there was only one shot in it. The top four positions will be resolved next week when the positions will be decided not on who wins their game but more on who loses !!
