Hello to all our Barnet League players and supporters. Its week six and your webmaster has returned from Kielder unscathed and ready for action. Last week saw the very unfortunate withdrawal of Letchworth Tigers from our league. This is very disappointing, however the website has been updated to reflect this and the games that Tigers had already played have been removed from the schedules and results table. This week we had four games being played at Hatfield. With four of our top teams playing each other how will the top of the table be affected? Read On.
Mat one had Northiam South’s Dennis, Jeff and Brian playing Greenwood Peckers Wendy, Sue and Mark. Peckers got this game started with a double to which South replied by taking a single. Peckers fought back and increased their lead with a triple. Following this with a single and two doubles Peckers had pulled out a lead of 10 – 1. South came back on end seven for a single but Peckers continued the attack with a further single and a double to be 13 – 2 up after nine ends. South looked about for some direction and found the way forward. They started with a four and followed that with two triples. Taking end thirteen (unlucky for Peckers) for a double they had the lead at 14 – 13. Continuing in the correct direction they held a third triple to be 17 – 13 up with one end to play. Peckers awoke on the last end and held a double but South had sent that needle spinning and took the win at 17 – 15.
Mat two and Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren were playing Northiam East’s Mike, Jan and Martin. East started strongly with four and followed this with a double for a 6 – 0 lead. Hawks swooped in they confused East’s compass and took a triple, following this with a single and a second triple they took the lead at 7 – 6. Hawks gained more height, taking a third triple and extending their lead to 10 – 6. East pushed hard and took a single on end seven, however their sense of direction eluded them on the remaining eight ends. Hawks pushed their advantage starting with a double they continued with three more singles, two doubles, a four and a tremendous five to take a substantial win at 28 – 7.
Mat three and Fairfield Falcons Gill A, Gill H and Bev were playing Harpenden Eagles Deidre, Denise and Beryl. Eagles started with a single however Falcons replied taking a double and a single for the lead. Eagles gained height, drawing level with a double they followed that with two singles for a 5 – 3 lead after six ends. Falcons got off the leash and held a single followed by a triple. Eagles pushed back for a double on end nine and it was all square at seven all. Falcons went back in the lead with a single and slowly extended their lead with two further singles. End thirteen and Eagles pulled back with a single of their own. Falcons pushed again, holding the last two ends for two more singles they had the win at 12 – 8.
Mat four and Harpenden Owls Valerie, Barbara and Gordon were playing St Margaret’s Tony, Stephen and Jeanette. St Margaret’s started the game with a double to which Owls replied for a single. St Margaret’s took a magnificent five on end three for a 7 – 1 lead. Owls came back for a single only to see St Margaret’s take a second double on end five. Owls took their third single the following end which St Margaret’s matched on end seven. Following this with a triple St Margaret’s had pulled out a lead of 13 – 3 after eight ends. Owls dropped in on their prey and held a double on end nine however this was the last end they held. St Margaret’s pushed their advantage, holding four singles and two fours they had a comprehensive win at 25 – 5.
Well, what an interesting week with three of our clubs fielding two teams. We had two Greenwood – Northiam games which ended in one game each. Whereas both Harpenden teams succumbed to defeat. Hawks win keeps them at the top of the table and they are now the only team not to lose a game they also have a substantial shot difference. St Margaret’s and Fairfield Falcons both took their first wins of the season. Next week sees Greenwood, Harpenden and Shillington all sending two teams to Hatfield. Letchworth Lions and Northiam South are playing each other, only separated by a shot difference of one who will take the win and be in that second spot next week.
Don’t forget, our I.C.C. squad are playing Essex at Stevenage on Sunday. This is the first time these two teams have played each other since I have been involved, is it the first time ever? If your not playing why not come along to support, not only will you see some great bowls you may win the raffle. If you can’t make it look out for the match report on this website.
Best Wishes from the Webmaster.👀
