Barnet League - Final Week

13 Mar 2019

Last night saw the final week of the Barnet League at Hatfield with two matches in both Divisions. Division 2 is now complete but there are 2 postponed matches left  before Division 1 is finally done and dusted.

Congratulations to Greenwood Goshawks who have already completed their fixture list and secured a well-deserved first place in Division 1, but  the minor places are still open! Both Letchworth teams were in action with contrasting results. Second placed Letchworth Dragons were always trailing a superior St Margaret's 1 team finally losing 16 - 7. However, the Dragons still retain their second place but can still be leapfrogged by fourth placed Northiam East if Northiam win their postponed game against St Margaret's 1 by 8 shots or more! In the other Division 1 match, third placed Letchworth Lions pulled off a last minute win against bottom placed Harpenden Nightjars. Trailing by 4 shots with only 2 ends to play it looked like the Lions were going out with a whimper but a maximum 6 on the penultimate end brought a dramatic change in their fortunes! By holding the Nightjars to a single on the last end Lions won by 15 shots to 14 and retain their third place perhaps for the time being only! The other postponed match is a bottom of the table clash between Greenwood Hawks and Harpenden Nightjars.

In a completed Division 1, congratulations are due  to Cuffley Gin and Cuffley Tonic for taking first and second place! Gin had already completed their fixture list but their club mates Tonic were in action against Shillington White. Taking a maximum 6, Tonic took the lead on end 6 and went on to win by 14 shots to 11 and promotion to second place, with Shillington White taking 4th. The other second division match was very evenly fought between 3rd placed Harpenden Owls and bottom of the table Northiam West. All square at 8 ends and again at 12 ends, Northiam took a 4 on the final end to win by one shot, 12-11! However, the result did not affect their placings, with the Owls retaining 3rd place and Northiam staying bottom.
