Barnet League Week Ten

19 Dec 2023

Barnet League week ten.

This week, our last before the Christmas break saw one match in the first and one in the second division with one being postponed until next year. We also had our first semi-final of the Barnet League Cup main competition.

Division one

Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren played Letchworth Pumas Andrew, Alan S and Alan H. Hawks got started by taking a single on the first end. Pumas attacked taking a double followed by a single. With our triple ‘A’s feeling recharged they followed this with a four to go 7 – 1 up after four ends. Hawks then went on the attack, taking a succession of four singles they had reduced Pumas lead to 7 – 5 at the halfway stage. Andrew, Alan and Alan then took two singles of their own to make it 9 – 5 after ten ends. Hawks swooped in for a double but Pumas more than matched this with a triple, following it with two further singles they were 13 – 7 up with two ends to play.  Hawks held the last two ends for some more singles but Pumas had the win at 13 – 9.

Division two

St Margaret’s Mercury’s Jeanette, Stephen and Darren played Northiam West’s Margaret, Brian and Jeff. Mercury started with a single. West took a double but with Mercury also taking a double on end three they had regained the lead at 3 – 2. Margaret, Brian and Jeff then held a four, following this with two singles they had an 8 – 3 lead after six ends. As this game warmed up Mercury rose in the glass, taking a single, a triple and a double they had the lead at 9 – 8. West then took the following end for a single and it was all square with five ends to play. With Mercury rising, they took three ends for singles to be 12 – 9 up with two ends to play. West’s direction then improved, taking the penultimate end for a double they had reduced Mercury’s lead to 12 – 11. The last end saw the temperature fall and West’s compass improve as they took a further double for the win at 13 – 12.

We are now at the halfway stage in this competition. Pumas win gains them one place in the first division. West’s win puts them in top spot in the second division. We still have a long way to go in this competition and the lead could easily change in both divisions.

Barnet League Cup

Our first Semi-final in the main competition had Greenwood Peckers Audrey, Brian and Mark playing Northiam East’s Mike, Martin and Jan. The first leg started with East holding a single. Peckers came back taking a double and a single to be 3 – 1 up. East took a further single but with Peckers taking a further double they were 5 – 2 up with two ends to play. Mike, Martin and Jan then took the last two ends for doubles and won the first leg 6 – 5. The second leg saw West start as they left of by taking the first triple of this game and they followed it with a single. Peckers then held end three for a four and it was all square. East regained the lead with a double on the following end. Peckers held end five for a single but East forged on, taking a second triple and a double they had won the second leg 11 – 05. Winning both legs, Northiam East become our first finalist in the Barnet League Cup. We will have to wait until January 23rd before we find out who they will meet in the final.
