Here we are and its week nine already and we are a third of the way through our Barnet League season. With Greenwood Peckers sitting comfortably at the top of the table it is way to early to predict them as winners. Let’s see how the games this week at Hatfield have affected the table.
St Margaret’s Mercury’s Lynn, Rebecca and Darren were playing AFC Falcons Gill, Neil and Bev. Mercury started this game by taking a single, they then doubled up to take a double and doubled again for a four. The fourth end they couldn’t manage to double again for an eight 🤣 however they settled for a single and an 8 – 0 lead. The Falcons got going and held a three on end five and followed this with a double. Mercury held their third single of the game on end seven. Falcons pulled right back with a triple and following this with a single it was all square at nine all after nine ends. Mercury matched Falcons single to pull in front only to see Falcons go back in the lead with a double. Following this with a single they were 12 – 10 up after twelve ends. Mercury resolved this by coming straight back for a double to square the game on end thirteen. Mercury then took the last two ends for a single apiece for the win at 14 – 12.
Mat two had Letchworth Lions Lisa, Margaret and Alan H, playing Harpenden Eagles Sue, Denise and Beryl. Eagles took the lead on the first end with a triple. Lions fought back, starting with a single they then took three triples in a row for a 10 – 1 lead after five ends. Eagles attacked on end six for a single but Lions came back again, taking a double and a triple they had a 15 – 4 lead after eight ends. End nine saw Eagles hold a double and followed this with a single. Lions matched the single, Eagles fought back by taking a single followed by a triple to reduce Lions lead to 16 – 11 with two ends to play. Lions attacked on the penultimate end and increased their lead with a final double. The last end saw Eagles hold on for a single but Lions had the win at 18 – 12.
Mat three had our two ends of the table playing each other. Potters Bar Kestrels Ann, Pam and Dave lined up against Greenwood Peckers Wendy, Sue and Mark. Following their win last week, could Kestrels make it two in a row. Peckers started with a double and followed this with a triple. Kestrels attacked on end three by taking a double. Peckers got their heads down, they started with a single, followed this with a double then went in for the kill with a hotshot six on end seven for a 14 – 2 lead. Kestrels came in for a single but Peckers reply was to take a four. Kestrels then took another single, Peckers replied this time by taking a triple. Kestrels came back yet again for a single but with Peckers replying with another four and following this with a triple and a single they had increased their lead to 28 – 5 with one end to play. Kestrels finished on a high by taking a triple but Peckers had a good win at 29 – 8.
Our last mat of the evening number four had St Margaret’s Mars team of Tony, Paul and Derek playing Northiam East’s Mike, Jeff and Martin. Mars started well taking two doubles before East got control of the mat. East started with a triple and followed this with two doubles for a 7 – 4 lead after five ends. Mars started to rise by pulling back with two singles, they then rose further and took the lead with a double. Continuing their run they held a triple followed by a single for a 12 – 7 lead after ten ends. East found some direction and took a single and following this with a triple to be within one shot of Mars at 11 – 12 after twelve ends. Mars doubled their lead with a single on end thirteen, East held the following end for a double and it was 13 all going into the last end. The last end saw both teams fighting for the win. Mars were successful, taking a single for the win at 14 – 13.
At the end of week nine our table has seen very little change. Both St Margaret’s teams got a win this week resulting in the only movement in the table with Mercury rising two places. Next week sees three of our top four playing so there could be some movement at the top of the table. Mat four will have a Shillington Derby. Check your news pages next week to see how it all pans out.
