As we head into winter and the snow appears thankfully the A1 was clear last night and everybody made it safely to Jimmy Mac’s for week ten of the Barnet League. With four games being played including a derby between the two Shillington teams lets see how the evening went.
Mat one had Northiam East’s Mike, Jeff and Martin playing Harpenden Eagles, Gordon, Diedre and Beryl. The first end was very tight with it being declared a tied end, this was followed by East taking the lead with a double. Eagles replied by taking a single on end three to make it 1 – 2. East then found their direction whilst Eagles went home to roost. Taking five singles, a double, a triple and two fours East’s lead steadily rose to 20 – 1. Eagles came back on end thirteen for a single but East continued the onslaught by taking the last two ends for a double and a four for a substantial 26 – 2 win.
Mat two had Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren playing St Margaret’s Mercury’s Lyn, Terri and Roger. Hawks started well by taking a triple, they followed this with a single, a triple and a double for a 9 – 0 lead. End five and with the temperature in the hall increasing Mercury started to rise. They started with a single and pushed further for a triple and two more singles to reduce Hawks lead to 9 – 6 after eight ends. Hawks went back on the attack, taking a single and a double for a 12 – 6 lead. End eleven saw Mercury take their first double of the game but Hawks then held a triple and following this with a double had a 15 – 8 lead with two ends to play. The temperature rose again and Mercury held a single and followed this with a final double. Hawks had the win at 17 – 11.
Mat three and our table leaders Greenwood Peckers Audrey, Sue and Brian were challenged by Fairfield Falcons Gordon, Gill and Bev. Falcons started well with a triple. Peckers then got going, they started with a double and pulled level with a single. This was followed by a second single, a four and a double and they were 10 – 3 up after six ends. Falcons took the mat back, they started with two singles and followed this with a magnificent four to reduce Peckers lead to 10 – 9 after nine ends. Peckers then extended their lead with a five, Falcons came straight back for a single. Peckers reply was a triple for an 18 – 10 lead with three ends to go. Falcons held on for another single but Peckers extended their lead with another triple. Falcons held on to the last end for a double but Peckers continued their unbeaten run with a 21 – 13 win.
On mat four we had the Shillington derby. We had Black’s Bill, Paul and Julia playing Red’s Derek, Michelle and Trevor. Red started well with a triple only to see Black take the lead with a four on end two. Red held a single on end three and it was all square at four apiece. Black slipped in the lead with a single only to see Red hold a double followed by a triple for a 9 – 5 lead after six ends. Blacks pulled right back by matching Red’s triple. Red then held another single for a 10 – 8 lead at the halfway stage. Black then started a run of three singles and had the lead back at 11 – 10 after eleven ends. Black then pushed their advantage and held a five on end twelve and followed this with a single. Red came back on the penultimate end and held their third single of the game. The last end saw Black hold on for yet another single and the win at 18 – 11.
Greenwood Peckers are sitting at the top of our table with their unbeaten run of eight games. We then have four teams with ten points only separated by shot difference. Our only movers this week were Northiam due to their 24-shot difference win. Although Peckers are getting a rest next week their top spot will be safe, but what about those below them? Look out next week to see what happens.
