Hello all our Barnet League players and followers. Last night saw another packed hall at Hatfield. We had four Barnet League games and two roll up mats with those eagerly practising for their forthcoming games. With two Greenwood teams, two Shillington teams and two Harpenden teams playing we were bound to have some table changes by the end of the night. Read on to see how it went.
Mat one had Shillington Red’s Tom, Carol and Neil playing Harpenden Eagles Suzanne, Deidre and Beryl. Reds came to the mat and held the first end for a double; they followed this with a single and a second double before Eagles could get started with a single on end four. Red came straight back for a double and a 7 – 1 lead after five ends. Eagles soared up and held the following two ends for a second single and a double to reduce Red’s lead to 7 – 4. Reds attacked again, taking a triple, two doubles, a four and a second triple they pulled out a lead of 19 – 4. The last three ends saw Eagles gain some height and soar in for two singles and a triple to reduce Red’s win to 19 – 9.
Mat two and Eagles nest mates Harpenden Owls Val, Jean and Gordon were playing Greenwood Peckers Audrey, Sue and Brian. Peckers had the upper hand and dominated this game. In the first seven ends they held four triples, a double and two singles for a 16 – 0 lead. Owls left the nest on end eight and held a single, unfortunately they then returned. Peckers had another run of ends, taking a four and three singles they increased their lead to 23 – 1. Owls flew back in on end thirteen for a second single but Peckers continued their dominance by taking a second four and finishing on a single for a 28 – 2 win.
Mat three had Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren playing Shillington Black’s Paul, Julia and Bill. Our table toping team started this game by taking a single. Blacks came straight back and took the lead with a double; they followed this with a triple and a single for a 6 – 1 lead after four ends. Hawks dug in and started to come back. They took a single followed by two doubles and it was all square at six all after seven ends. Hawks then took the lead with a single on end eight. Blacks pulled back level on end nine with a single of their own. Hawks then upped the pressure; they started with two doubles and followed this with a single. Continuing their run they held a four and a triple to be 19 – 7 up with one end to play. The last end saw Blacks after revenge, their last bowl rolled into the head and they had taken a four to reduce Hawks win to 19 – 11.
Mat four had Letchworth Lions David, Alan S and Margaret playing Northiam South’s Dennis, Jeff and Brian Mc. Lions started with a short siesta while South took three triples and two singles for an 11 – 0 lead after five ends. Lions awoke and held a triple. South got back on the correct track and matched this triple and followed this with a double to increase their lead to 16 – 3. Lions roared and attacked end nine by holding a four, they followed this with two singles, reducing South’s lead to 16 – 9 they had returned to the game. South upped the pressure, taking a single followed by a triple they had increased their lead to 20 – 9 with two ends to play. Lions came back to the game on the last two ends by taking them for singles but the damage had been done and South had the win at 20 – 11.
Well what a week. Both Greenwood teams getting a win keeps them at the top of the table. Both Harpenden teams have slid downwards. Shillington’s mixed fortunes sees Reds climb up to forth place overtaking Black who have now slipped down to seventh. Next week our two top teams have a rest week. With no losses Hawks look secure in first place, Peckers could move up to second spot. Who will win in the derby between the two Shillington teams? With the two teams at the bottom of the table playing each other which will get their first win of the season? Come back next week for the Soap Opera that is our much loved Barnet League.
Best Wishes from the Webmaster.👀
