Barnet League Week Eight

18 Nov 2025

Hello to all our Barnet league players and followers. Its now week eight and we are approaching the halfway point when our single division of twelve teams gets split into two divisions of six. This week sees a Shillington derby and our bottom two teams get to play each other. Our division leaders Greenwood Hawks have a rest week but their stable mates Greenwood Peckers are playing. Read on to see how this week went.

Mat one and Northiam East’s Mike, Jan and Martin were playing Greenwood Peckers Audrey, Brian and Mark. Peckers got started with a single and followed this with a triple. East came to the mat and pulled it back with a single and a double only to see Peckers hold a second triple for a 7 – 3 lead after five ends. East attacked again and held their second double but Peckers pushed and held another single and a double to increase their lead to 10 – 5 after eight ends. East pushed again and held a double, following this with a second double, their fourth of the game they had pulled it back to within one shot of Peckers. Peckers held end eleven for a double but East matched this on twelve and there was still just one shot in it at 12 – 11 to Peckers with three ends to play. Peckers held a single and again East matched this and went into the last end only the one shot down. The last end saw both teams deliberate over their shots, however it was Peckers that held on for a final single and the win at 14 – 12.

Mat two had St Margaret’s Jeanette, Lyne and Stephen playing Letchworth Lions David, Mick and Margaret. St Margaret’s took the first end for a single. Lions started gently with a single then roared with a four followed by a second single for a 6 – 1 lead after four ends. St Margaret’s came back for a single and followed that with a second. Lions covered these with a double on end seven and followed this with four close ends of singles for a 12 – 3 lead after eleven ends. St Margaret’s pushed again and took a single. They followed this with two doubles to reduce Lion’s lead to 12 – 8 with one end to play. The last end saw Lions go into overdrive, taking a magnificent five they had a good win at 17 – 8.

Mat three and Potters Bar Kestrels Gill, Barry and Dave were playing Harpenden Owls Val, Jean and Gordon. With both teams looking for their first win of the season it was all to play for. Owls started with a single but Kestrels instantly matched this on end two and followed on with two more. Owls held end five for a single to double their score. Kestrels held their fourth single on end six, Owls followed by taking the first double of the game and it was all square at four all after seven ends. Kestrels then started a run of four ends, taking three singles and a double they had pulled out a 9 – 4 lead. Owls pushed again for another single on end twelve. Kestrels matched this then followed on with a double on the penultimate end and were 12 – 5 up with one end to play Owls attacked the last end and took the largest scoring end of the game with a triple but it was Kestrels that took the win at 12 – 8 and got some points on the table.

The Shillington derby was held on mat four. Red’s Trevor, Michelle and Neil were playing Black’s Bill, Tony and Julia. Black started well with a double which Reds matched. Blacks came straight back for a second double then followed this with a hotshot six for a 10 – 2 lead after four ends. Blacks continued their run with a single which Red’s matched on end six. They followed with a second single to reduce Black’s lead to 11 – 4 after seven ends. Blacks then pulled further ahead with a double and a single. Reds pushed, holding two singles and a double they had reduced Black’s lead to six shots on end twelve. Black’s pulled away again with a double on end thirteen. The last two ends went Red’s way for singles but Blacks had the win at 16 – 10.

Greenwood Peckers win sees them move up the table to second spot just below Greenwood Hawks. Lions win keeps them in fourth place but they have played one more than everyone else. It is the three spots below them that is most interesting. Right on that first/second division divide we have three teams on six points with only a shot difference of two separating the three of them. Harpenden Owls are now the only team to score a point. Next week sees them up against Northiam East, we will have to see how that one plays out. With both Shillington teams on a rest week a win for East would put them up to fifth. Fairfield Falcons take on St Margaret’s, as they are only separated by a shot difference of one it could be a close game. See you all next week.

Best Wishes from the Webmaster.👀
