This week there were only three games played in our Barnet League as one has had to be rescheduled to February at the end of stage one. Lets see if those three that were played held any surprises. Read on.
Mat two had Northiam South’s Margaret, Dennis and Brian playing Potters Bar Kestrels Mike, Bernice and Steve. Kestrels got this game started with a single and followed this with two more. South then got going with two singles and a double for the lead. Kestrels came straight back for a forth single and it was all square at four all after seven ends. South went on the attack; they held end eight for a double and followed that with two more for a 10 – 4 lead after ten ends. Kestrels pushed on end eleven and halved their deficit with a triple, they followed this with three singles and it was all square at ten all with one end to play. The last end was hard fought and South just held on for a final single and the narrow win at 11 – 10.
Mat three had St Margaret’s Brian, Tony and Jeanette playing Fairfield Falcons Bev, Gill H and Neil. St Margaret’s started with a single and followed that with a second. Falcons pushed harder and took a single on end three, following that with the fourth single of the game it was all square at two all. St Margaret’s came back for the fifth single of the game and followed this with a triple. Not to be outdone Falcons held end seven for a four and it was all square again at six all. St Margaret’s pushed again for a single but this time Falcons took a double and the lead for the first time. St Margaret’s attacked again and drew back level with a single and then followed on with a double and a triple for a 13 – 8 lead with three ends to play. With the following two ends going for a single apiece St Margaret’s had a five shot lead going into the last end. Falcons attacked again and held the final end for a triple but St Margaret’s had the win at 14 – 12.
Mat five had Northiam East’s Mike, Jan and Martin playing bottom of the table Harpenden Owls Val, Mike and Gordon. Owls got on the scorecard first with a single and continued with two more. East held on to end four for a single but Owls went back on the attack and took a double followed by a triple for an 8 – 1 lead after six ends. East went on the attack; they started with a double and pulled themselves into the game with a triple. Owls called out and held a four on end nine to improve their lead to 12 – 6. East pushed again and held a double on end ten. With the following two ends going for a single apiece Owls were maintaining their lead. Owls then pulled further in front with a double on end thirteen. With the score at 9 – 15 East attacked the last two ends. They started with a double and finished with a triple. They had closed the gap but Owls had got their first win of the season with a score of 15 – 14.
Well what a week, we may have only had three games but they were all very close and gave us some surprises. With the two Northiam teams playing the bottom two teams in the league who would have thought that Harpenden Owls would get their first win of the season and Potters Bar Kestrels would get to within one point of South. These two teams are improving as the season goes on. Next week Owls are playing their nest mates Eagles and Kestrels are playing Shillington Red, it will be interesting to see how these play out. We also have both Greenwood teams playing, come back next week to see how everyone does.
Best Wishes from the Webmaster.👀
