Barnet League Week Ten

02 Dec 2025

This week saw another four games played at Hatfield with plenty of people on the roll up mats. With two Greenwood teams, two Harpenden teams and both Shillington teams playing read on to see how the evening went.

Mat one had a Harpenden Derby, Eagles Sue, Beryl and Brian were playing Owls Val, Jean and Gordon. Owls left the nest first; they took the first end for a single and followed that with a second. Eagles rustled their wings and got on the scorecard with a single on end three. With both teams soaring and diving the following four ends went for two singles apiece and it 4 – 3 to Owls after seven ends. Eagles broke the mould and took the lead with a double on end eight. Owls pulled level with a further single then regained the lead with a double and flew further in front with another single and a second double to be 10 – 5 up with three ends to play. Eagles gained height and went on the attack; they started with a single and followed that with the first and only triple of the game. The final end saw Eagles continue their winning run with their fifth single of the game to draw level at ten all.

Mat two and Greenwood Peckers Sue, Brian and Mark were playing Shillington Black’s Paul, Tony and Bill. Peckers got started with a double, they followed that with two singles for a 4 – 0 lead after three ends. With two bowls on the jack end four was declared a tied end. Black then took a single, Peckers replied for a triple and a 7 – 1 lead after six ends. Black pushed harder, they took two singles and a double to reduce Peckers lead to 7 – 5 after nine ends. Peckers attacked and held their second triple of the game; Black came straight back for a single but Peckers pushed again for another single and extended their lead with a double to be 13 – 6 up with two ends to play. The last two ends were closely fought with each team taking a single but Peckers had the win at 14 – 7.

Mat three and Northiam South’s Dennis, Jeff and Brian Mc were playing Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren. South got going with two singles, Hawks swooped in for a double on end three and it was all square. South took a third single which Hawks matched and it was all square again at three all after five ends. South then upped the stakes by taking a triple, Hawks came back for a single and followed this with a further single on end eight. South pushed again for a two shot lead with another single on end nine. Hawks took the lead straight back with a triple on end ten and followed this with two more singles. South came back for a double on end thirteen to reduce Hawks lead to one shot at 10 – 9. Hawks extended their lead on the penultimate end with a double. The last end saw South go on the attack again but this time they only managed another single giving Hawks another win at 12 – 10.

Mat four had Potters Bar Kestrels Frank, Gill and Barry playing Shillington Red’s Tom, Trevor and Neil. Kestrels started strongly with a triple which Reds matched on end two. Kestrels pulled ahead with a double but again Reds matched this on end four and it was five all. Reds took the lead with a triple only to see Kestrels take their second triple and it was all square again at eight all after six ends. Reds took the lead back with a single and followed this with a second. Kestrels came back for a single but this time Reds pulled ahead with a triple for a 13 – 9 lead after ten ends. Kestrels held on for a further single on end eleven. Reds took the following two ends for singles to extend their lead to 15 – 10 with two to play. The final two ends both went Kestrels way, this time for two final singles giving Reds the win at 15 – 12.

Hawks sixth win of the season makes them now the only team yet to lose a game. Peckers win sees them leapfrog South into second place. Red’s win takes them to fifth spot and firmly in the top half whereas Black’s loss sees them slid down to seventh place. Next week we will only have two games as two have had to be postponed.

Best Wishes from the Webmaster.👀
