This week those teams that drew a bye in the first round joined last weeks winners for the quarter finals of the Gayler Cup. Read on to see how week two of this competition went.
Mat one had Fairfield Falcons Gill, Neil and Bev playing Northiam East’s Mike, Jan and Martin. Set one started with Falcons holding four singles in a row. East halved their deficit with a double on end five and halved it again with a single. Falcons fought back, holding a single on end seven they had won the first set 5 – 3. Set two started and Falcons continued with a single. This set saw East match this single and then take the lead with a second. Falcons pushed on end four and regained the lead with a double. End five and in this close run set East pulled ahead with a double of their own. Falcons came back to the mat on the penultimate end and held a single to be four all going into the last end. The last end saw East hold a triple the highest scoring end of the two sets’ Taking the second set East had drawn level and we had another of those single end shoot out deciders. East held onto the last end and became our first Semi-finalists.
Mat two and Letchworth Tigers Angela, Andrew and Alan played Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren in our second quarter final. Hawks got started with a single but Tigers took the lead with a double. Hawks drew level with a second single then took the lead with a double. End five and Tigers roared and went into the lead with a triple, they followed this with a single to be 6 – 4 up going into the last end of this first set. Hawks attacked and held a double for the draw. Set two started with all to play for whoever takes the set wins. Hawks attacked the second set they started with a single and continued with a double. Tigers held end three for a single but Hawks came straight back and continued their run with a single followed by a double and a four for a 10 – 1 lead and no way back for the Tigers. Greenwood Hawks become our second Semi-finalists.
Mat three and Greenwood Ravens Angie, Penny and Sue were playing Greenwood Peckers Audrey, Brian and Mark. Peckers took the first end for a double. Ravens came straight back for a single then took the lead with a triple. Peckers held end four for their second double and it was all square at four all. Ravens then doubled their score with a four. Peckers pushed again and held a triple, they followed this with a single on the last end and we had another draw at eight all. Set two started with Peckers holding a double followed by a triple. Ravens took the following two ends for singles but end five saw Peckers take control, holding the last three ends for singles they had won the second set 8 – 2 and had become our third Semi-finalists.
Mat four and a Shillington derby was taking place. Shillington Red Robins Trevor, Michelle and Neil were playing Shillington Blackbirds Paul, Julia and Bill. Red Robins got going with a single followed by a triple. Blackbirds held end three for a single. Red Robins came straight back for a double and a triple for a 9 – 1 lead with two ends to play. End six and Blackbirds held a second single but with a seven shot lead Red Robins had won the first set. Blackbirds returned to the nest and had a swap around. The first end saw them hold a single which Red Robins matched on end two. Blackbirds attacked end three and held a four, they followed this with two singles for a 7 – 1 lead with two ends to play. Red Robins pulled it back with a single on the penultimate end. They followed on by holding a double on the last end but Blackbirds had forced a draw by winning the second set 7 – 4. The tie breaker followed and Red Robins continued their short run of ends, holding a double they had narrowly become our fourth Semi-finalists.
