Barnet League week 11

18 Jan 2022

Hello to all you Barnet League followers. Week eleven saw only one first Division match and two Division two matches.

Division one

St Margaret’s Rarebits played Greenwood Peckers. Peckers got the bowls rolling by taking a single on the first end. Rarebits replied by getting on the scorecard with a single of their own. Peckers then took a single followed by a double to go 4 – 1 up after four ends. Rarebits answer to this was to take two singles and a double giving them the lead at 5 – 4 after seven ends. Peckers took a single to level and a further single to go one shot up. Rarebits then took a double to reverse the lead again and go 7 – 6 up after ten ends. Peckers then took the first triple of the match and followed it with a single to go 10 – 7 up with three ends to play. Rarebits replied taking a double and a single to level the match at 10 all with one end to play. Peckers took the last end for three shots giving them the win of 13 – 10.

Next week sees three first division matches. All eyes will be on the Shillington derby which will determine which Shillington team holds the top spot.

Your😄unbiased😄reporter will be sure to update you next week. With six of the seven teams playing the whole table could be shaken up a bit.

Division two

Harpenden Blackbirds played Greenwood Hawks. Hawks eagerly eyed up their prey and took the first end for a double. Blackbirds started to fight back by taking the second end for a single. Hawks continued their attack, swooping in for a single and a triple followed by a double, a single and a four to go 13 – 1 up after seven ends. Blackbirds then gained some height and came at Hawks for a double before Hawks dived in for a single. Blackbirds attacked again for a further double to reduce Hawks advantage to 14 – 5 after ten ends. The following two ends saw both teams swoop in and out for a single apiece, allowing Hawks to retain their nine shot lead. Hawks took two singles and seeing that Blackbirds were floundering went in for the kill taking four shots on the last end and winning comfortably 21 – 6.

Cuffley Tonic played Greenwood Eagles. Undefeated Tonic started well taking the first end for a double but Eagles came straight back taking a single of their own. Tonic, feeling a little shaken took a double, a four and a single to take a 9 – 1 lead after five ends. Eagles then soared above, got their eye on the bowl and took a three followed by a five to bring the scores back level to 9 all after seven ends. End eight saw Eagles take a further single and the lead for the first time in the match. Tonic getting concerned about their unbeaten record, effervesced, taking a double and two singles to regain the lead at 13 – 10 after eleven ends. Eagles, gaining some height, then took two singles to narrow Tonic’s lead to one shot with two ends to play. Tonic replied by taking the last two ends for singles to retain their unbeaten record winning the match 15 – 12.

With two matches being played next week the mid table could change round. The real question is can anyone catch Cuffley Tonic? Whilst mathematically possible it is looking less likely.
