The Aussie Pairs Finals at The Hive

06 Sep 2023

Hertfordshire’s summer Aussie Pairs competition was completed last night (05th September) at The Hive Hatfield. This competition, which started on the 16th May saw 16 teams compete in this open format where you play a maximum of eight games over the summer months.  Topping the table after fifteen weeks of play were the Blues Brothers with eight wins. Second place were Teddy Bears Assassins with seven wins narrowly pushing Colney Heath Wizards into third place on shot difference. So the stage was set for the Grand Final last night between the top two teams. Having already met once in the competition on the 30th May where the ‘Blues Brothers’ won 17 – 8 the crowds gathered to watch this ‘rematch’ final.

Blues Brothers won the toss, with Mark & Darren for Blues Brothers and Dennis & Jeff for Teddy Bears Assassins the competition began. The first end saw Blues Brothers hold on for a double.  Teddy Bears Assassins came straight back, going into the lead with a triple. Blues Brothers replied taking a single to level the score and followed this with a further single to take the lead. Blues Brothers then held a triple to extend their lead to 7 – 3 after five ends. End six saw the jack hit the ditch and after a few measures by our Umpire for the evening Brian Fowler, Blues Brothers had held a five to take a 12 – 3 lead. Teddy Bears Assassins attacked end seven, taking the second five of the match they had reduced Blues Brothers lead back to four shots at 12 – 8. Blues Brothers then held a single but with Teddy Bears Assassins following this for a double, they had reduced Blues Brothers lead by a further shot. Blues Brothers matched this double on end ten and followed it with a single and a triple to give them a 19 – 10 lead going into the last end. The last end saw Teddy Bears Assassins take a double giving Blues Brothers the win at 19 – 12. Well done to both teams for giving us spectators an exciting and worthy final to finish our 2022 / 2023 season.
