First week of this seasons Barnet League

Welcome to all our Barnet League players and followers. Last night, October the 03rd saw us commence our annual Barnet League competition at The Hive Hatfield. Three matches were played last night two in the first division and one in the second.

Division one

Shillington Black played Greenwood Hawks on mat one. Hawks team of Bill Durham, Barry Thorogood and Darren Brown got the game started with a single, following this with a double, a triple a further single and a resounding five, they were 12 – 0 up after five ends. Black’s team of Julia Bruce, Toni Gearing and Bill Gearing then got on the scoreboard taking a triple. Hawks reply was to take a single but Black came straight back matching it with a single of their own and it was 13 – 4 after eight ends. Hawks then put together another run, taking a triple and three singles they were 19 – 4 up with three ends to play. Black held end thirteen for a single but with Hawks holding a further single and finishing on a triple they had a conclusive win at 23 – 5.

Northiam East played Shillington Red on mat two. Shillington Red, last year’s division two winners Tom Still, Carol Still and Neil Rixon started this game by taking a single. Northiam East’s Jan Rogers, Martin Nash and Mike Eccleston took end two for a double, following this with a further single and three triples, East had pulled out a lead of 12 – 1 after six ends. With the following two ends going for a single apiece East were maintaining their eleven shot lead. Red took two singles and East held a double and there was still an eleven shot difference after eleven ends. East took end twelve for a single to increase their lead to 16 – 4 with three ends to play. End thirteen was declared a draw with two bowls sitting on the jack. Reds then took the penultimate end for a double and followed this by taking a single on the last end giving East the win at 16 – 7.

Division two

Cuffley Gin played St Margaret’s Mercury. Gin’s team of Ann Laws, Jen Holding and Paul Farmer took the first end for a triple. Mercury’s team of Terri Watkinson, Stephen Harris and Jeanette Gayler replied by taking a double on end two. Gin then pulled further in front by taking two singles to go 5 – 2 up after four ends. Mercury then narrowed the gap by taking a double only to see Gin take a single to maintain their lead at 6 – 4 after six ends. Mercury then applied some pressure taking the next seven ends for two singles, four doubles and a triple to go 17 – 6 up with two ends to play. End fourteen went Gins way with them taking a triple. The last end saw Mercury take a final double and the win at 19 – 9.

 

The competition is now under way with the remaining six teams getting their first outing next week.
