Barnet League Penultimate Week

24 Mar 2026

This the penultimate week of this season’s Barnet League had five games being played at Hatfield. With all our mid table teams pushing hard to improve their positions lets see how these games went before the final push next week.

Mat one had Potters Bar Kestrels Frank, Steve and Dave playing Harpenden Eagles Sue, Denise and Brian. Kestrels got started with a single and followed that with two more. Kestrels continued their run with a four, three more singles and a triple to go 13 – 0 up after eight ends. Eagles awoke and left the nest, they dived in for a double and followed that with a single and a second double to reduce Kestrels lead to 13 – 5 after eleven ends. Kestrels attacked for a single but Eagles matched this on end thirteen and took another on end fourteen. The last end saw Eagles swoop in and hold a four but it was Kestrels that had the win at 14 – 11.

Mat two and Greenwood Peckers Audrey, Brian and Mark were playing Northiam East’s Jan, Mike and Martin. East took the first end for a double but Peckers replied taking two singles to draw level after three ends. East fixed their compass and held a four, they followed this with a double and two singles for a 10 – 2 lead after seven ends. Peckers awoke and took a triple followed by a single. East replied by matching this with a triple and a single of their own to maintain their eight shot lead with four ends to play. Peckers came back to the mat and held a triple they then got much closer with a four and took the lead with a double. Going into the last end being behind for the first time in this game East refreshed their compass and went on the attack. Holding a second triple they had regained the lead and took the win at 17 – 15.

Mat three and Shillington Black’s Paul, Rob and Julia took on Northiam South’s Margaret, Jeff and Brian. South got started with a single. Blacks went on the attack and took the lead with a triple on end two. South changed direction, they level the game with a double on end three then took the lead with a second. Blacks reduced their deficit with a single which South matched on end six. Blacks held a second single to be within one shot at 5 – 6 after seven ends. South then pulled away a little with a double and then reinforced their position with a five. Blacks saw Red and attacked back matching South’s five and following that with a single they were back on track and only two shots behind at 11 – 13 after eleven ends. South then increased their lead with a double and followed that with two singles. The last end saw South hold their fifth double of the game for a decent win at 19 – 11.

Mat four had the top two teams in the second division playing each other. St Margaret’s Tony, Jeanette and Darren were playing Shillington Red’s Trevor, Michelle and Neil. St Margaret’s drew first blood with a double. The Reds then took the lead with a four on end two. St Margaret’s came back for a single but the Reds matched that on end four. St Margaret’s then held a triple and took the lead at 6 – 5 after five ends. Reds got going again and held a double, they followed that with a single and a triple and had an 11 – 6 lead after eight ends. St Margaret’s came back for a single but the Reds pulled further ahead with a double on end ten for a 13 – 7 lead. St Margaret’s attacked, they started with two singles then took the lead on end thirteen (unlucky for some) with a tremendous five. They followed that with a single to be 15 – 13 up going into the last end. Reds attacked, holding the last end for a triple they had regained the lead to take the win at a close 16 – 15.

Mat five and Letchworth Lions David M, Alan S and Alan H were playing division one leaders Greenwood Hawks Barry, Val and Darren. Lions got n the scorecard first with a single. Hawks matched this on end two but Lions came back for a second single on end three. This time Hawks held a double to take the lead at 3 – 2. Lions came back for a third single and it was all square at three all after five ends. With the following two ends going for a single apiece it was still evens at four all after seven ends. Lions then retired for a short nap while Hawks swooped in for two triples and a single for an 11 – 4 lead after ten ends. Lions awoke and held a single and then roared a little and held a double to reduce Hawks lead to 11- 7 with three ends to play. Hawks dived in on end thirteen and held a single. They held on to their advantage, taking the last two ends for singles they took the win at 14 – 7.

As week twenty three comes to an end Greenwood Hawks and Shillington Red both take wins to maintain their respective division top positions. Potters Bar Kestrels get their second win of the season and climb out of that bottom spot. Can they take another win next week and climb any further up the table? Come back next week when our last five games of the season will complete our tables for another season.

Best Wishes from the Webmaster.👀
